first. no mary sues. seriously, arent you grown up enough to make a well rounded character?
Try using a template if youre stuck, or try making a back story for your character first. What happened to this character before this moment and age? when's their birthday? did they have any lovers? what's their sexuality? what made the character what they are?
Then you can focus on their personality. let me make note: if a character is shy or something, if another person spoke to your character for a bit the other person would say 'oh that person is an asshole' then they still should have A FULL RANGE OF EMOTIONS. not just mad. or sad. or whatever. your character should react, or else you have a boring character.
then you can show what they look like. yeah go crazy with that. you know what to do. but still remember, if all your characters are blond, cis, skinny, attractive males. thats boring. and lastly, skin colour. the origin of this depends on genes and where you live. your character lives in a place with lost of sun? darker skin. your character have POC parents? darker skin.
