(lets see. in this one! basically the only reason its an 'lotr au' is because there is basically the same species and its in the same middle earth. The only thing thats really different is the story. Ok.)
Middle earth had their men, dwarves, elves, and they had their wizards. And each of them had their roles. Wizards were seen as a protector, everyone in awe of their great power. The wise wizards were humble, although. The elves were magnificent healers and experts in growth. Dwarves were finders and engineers, their ability to dig deep within the earth. And the humans were workers. They farmed. Above all this, there was the elements. Air, water, fire and earth. In the dwarve's love for gold, they dug deep in the earth. They found great spheres of water, and great wind, and earth and stone, and one of fire. One of the miners approached the four spheres. The fire quelled, and stopped. Inside was a firey gem, that floated to the dwarf that approached, who had precise control of the gem thereafter.. Each of the great powers came to see the great mystery, and each person in the company, no matter whom, was chosen. Water for the great wizards, and earth for the tree-loving elves. The humans that came were chosen by air. They felt like they couldn't use the power as workers, and became angry. They all devised a system where the beings could 'borrow' another's element in times of great need. The humans made up excuses in their lands. Excuses of drought, and wildfires, and dying crops, and the other's lent the men their power. In return the men stole the power and it's up to you to get it back.
(Charlie fits in as the same thing, but his type, called a cherub, was actually a race like dwarves or elves. There were very few cherubs, having only a small kingdom. The humans hunted them as sport, not seeing the cherubs as intelligent beings. They were a sort of endangered species, and soon the kingdom fell and basically everyone died. Charlie was the fricking prince of that kingdom. hes like, the last of his kind. The eldest cherub lived for 1008 years, to give you a look at how long they live. Charlie would be about 353?? yeah. I've thought way too much of this.)
